The air force chiefs of Indonesia and Australia flew in tight formation over Darwin on Tuesday, August 4, in a symbolic demonstration of strengthened defense ties during Exercise Pitch Black 2026, marking a historic milestone as Indonesian T-50i Golden Eagle jets participated in the exercise for the first time.
Indonesian Air Force Chief of Staff Air Marshal Mohamad Tonny Harjono flew as a passenger aboard a TNI AU T-50i piloted by Lieutenant Colonel Kurniadi Sukmo Djatmiko, Commander of Air Squadron 15, while Royal Australian Air Force Chief of Air Force Air Marshal Stephen Chappell flew a parallel F/A-18F Super Hornet over Australia's Northern Territory.
Exercise Pitch Black 2026 Brings Together Regional Forces
The joint maneuver took place against the backdrop of Exercise Pitch Black 2026, the Royal Australian Air Force's premier biennial air combat exercise held in Darwin since 1983. This year's iteration brought together up to 100 aircraft and approximately 2,500 personnel from 20 nations across RAAF Bases Darwin, Tindal and Amberley for intensive tactical training from July 20 to August 7.
Air Marshal Tonny emphasized the deeper significance of the airborne display.
"Formation flight is a simple symbol that holds profound meaning for the relationship between the two air forces,"he said in an official statement released Wednesday, August 5. He noted that the exercise underscores both nations' commitment to regional stability and strategic interoperability across the Indo-Pacific.
Bilateral Agreements Strengthen Defense Cooperation
The joint flight gains additional significance following the signing of two major bilateral agreements: the Australia-Indonesia Defence Cooperation Agreement in August 2024 and the Treaty on Common Security, known as the Jakarta Treaty, signed in February 2026. These agreements aim to deepen defense ties including enhanced interoperability and joint operational activities between the two military forces.
Indonesian Deployment and T-50i Capabilities
Indonesia deployed four T-50i Golden Eagle jets and one C-130 Hercules transport aircraft to Australia for the exercise. The contingent departed from El Tari Air Base in Kupang on July 16 under the command of Air Marshal Somad, participating in tactical scenarios alongside allied air forces throughout the three-week drills.
The T-50i Golden Eagle represents a significant capability in Indonesia's air force arsenal. The supersonic advanced jet trainer, powered by a General Electric F404-GE-102 engine, can reach speeds of Mach 1.5, approximately 1,840 kilometers per hour, and carry up to five tons of weaponry. Indonesia has operated the platform since 2014, with an initial fleet of 16 aircraft stationed primarily at Air Squadron 15 at Iswahjudi Air Base in Central Java.
According to Air Marshal Somad, participation in the large-scale multinational drills enables Indonesian fighter pilots to execute joint operational tactics, tactical maneuvers and strategic scenarios alongside air defense teams from participating countries, building essential combat readiness and interoperability.
High-Level Political Support for Regional Cooperation
RAAF Base Darwin, Australia's main forward operating base in northern Australia, served as the primary venue for the exercise. The facility shares its runway with Darwin International Airport and plays a critical role in air support and surveillance operations throughout the region.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese officially opened Exercise Pitch Black 2026 in Darwin on July 20, highlighting the exercise's importance as Australia's premier international air combat exercise and demonstrating high-level political support for the multinational collaboration.
Defense officials confirmed that the formation flight adhered to all safety protocols and was completed without incident, successfully demonstrating the operational trust and coordination that has developed between the Indonesian and Australian air forces over decades of military cooperation.
